Clergy Society Meeting 2024

There will be a meeting of the Oriel Clergy Society in London on Tuesday 24 September 2024 at the Church of St Bartholomew the Great in the City of London. All Oriel clergy and ordinands are warmly invited to attend along with their spouses or partners.

There will be talks, prayer, lunch and time for discussion.

Programme for the day:

10.30am  Arrival and coffee
11.00am  Morning Prayer led by the Chaplain of Oriel with a homily by the Bishop of Stepney
11.30am  Keynote Address by the Rev’d Professor Mark Harris  
1.00pm  Lunch
2.00pm Seminar on the contemporary challenges of parish ministry led by the Rev’d Marcus Walker
3.30pm Tea and cake
4.00pm Depart or optional tour of St Paul’s Cathedral

Our Speakers:

Rev’d Professor Mark Harris, the new Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. Mark is a physicist and former college chaplain of Oriel. He describes himself as a theologian of science and is interested in its impact on modern views of the Bible, especially in terms of miracles, divine action, and the environmental crisis.

Rt Rev’d Dr Joanne Grenfell, the bishop of Stepney, who studied and lectured on English Literature at Oriel and wrote her doctoral thesis on Edmund Spenser and cultural geography. She is particularly responsible for safeguarding and social engagement in the Diocese of London.

Rev’d Marcus Walker, the Rector of Great St Bartholomew, who read History at Oriel. Marcus was deputy director of the Anglican Centre in Rome and, as well as being a member of General Synod, is one of the leaders of the Save the Parish movement.
