May Champagne Concert 2023

We are delighted to announce a truly exceptional event in our series of Champagne Concerts. It will be held on Friday, 5 May in Oriel Chapel, with a professional vocal ensemble directed from the organ by our Fellow and Tutor in Music, David Maw.

The concert will be devoted to the work of the 14th Century French composer- poet, Guillaume de Machaut. In the year that Oriel was founded, Guillaume de Machaut was a humble clerk in the court of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia. He was just embarking on a path that would make him the greatest poet and composer of his age. The programme will include his celebrated Messe de Nostre Dame, the first work of its kind in music history; and songs from across his long career. David is a renowned specialist in the music of Machaut and we are very pleased to be able to present a concert of this music conceived and directed by him. The music will be new to many of us; and the concert will represent a wonderful introduction to a world of courtly love, of melody and harmony, of singing and dancing from a period long before what we think of as “classical” music came into being”

Tickets for the concert are priced at £25 each and include a sparkling wine interlude. Orielenses are welcome to bring their guests, to share in what proves to be an excellent evening in College! To book your place please use the form below.
