Provost’s Talk with Musa al-Gharbi: We Have Never Been Woke

How a new “woke” elite uses the language of social justice to gain more power and status — without helping the marginalised and disadvantaged

On 28 May, join Musa al-Gharbi, recent author of We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural Contradictions of a New Elite, in conversation with Professor Teresa Bejan.

Al-Gharbi is a sociologist and assistant professor in the School of Communication and Journalism at Stony Brook University. He is also a columnist for The Guardian, and his writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic.

In We Have Never Been Woke, Al-Gharbi argues that the “woke” ideology embraced by elites is frequently self-serving, helping them to gain more power and status as they actively benefit from and perpetuate the inequalities they decry.

To RSVP, please email rebecca.bricklebank@oriel.ox.ac.uk. All are welcome to attend.
