Average UK three-person household could save up to £465 a year with a heat pump

The average UK three-person household could save up to £465 on heating annually by switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump, according to a new calculator developed by Dr Jan Rosenow, a Jackson Senior Research Fellow at Oriel College, in collaboration with the start-up Ambient, where he is a board member, and Which?

The news comes as the UK government has announced that they have launched a consultation on expanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers property owners up to £7,500 off the cost of replacing existing fossil fuel heating with a low-carbon alternative.

Rosenow said: “Heat pumps can save people money.

“Savings are highest when heat pumps are installed well to achieve good efficiency and save most money when operating on a heat pump tariff.”

The new calculator developed by Rosenow allows UK households to estimate potential savings from switching from gas boilers to heat pumps.

The calculation is based on his analysis at the Regulatory Assistance Project, where he is a senior advisor and vice president, and Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, where he leads the energy programme.
