In May of this year, Oriel announced that it would be accepting a Ukrainian refugee on a fully-funded postgraduate scholarship.
We are delighted to say that, thanks to the generosity of all who donated, we have achieved the target of £25,000 needed to fund the scholarship in only 7 weeks. This means that Oriel will welcome a Ukrainian scholar at the start of the new academic year in September.
Organising such a scholarship just a few months before the start of the year requires a huge coordinated effort. This was reflected in the make-up of those who helped to make this happen, with donations coming from all corners of our community – alumni, staff, and even current students.
The College would like to extend its deepest gratitude to all those who gave a gift to this scholarship. Together, we have given an opportunity to someone who may not have otherwise been able to continue their studies. We are proud to add to Oxford’s long tradition of supporting refugees, and of hopefully playing a small part in Ukraine’s recovery through continuing the education of their brightest young people.
Many of our students face unexpected financial stress once they arrive at Oriel, including international students like our Ukrainian scholar. If you would like to do something to help them, please consider setting up a regular gift to our Student Support fund. The fund provides support to those students who need it, so that they can get the most out of the unique education and experience that Oriel provides.
