Former captain awarded Michael Johnson Rugby Shield for “continued dedication to the club”

Captain of Oriel College Rugby Football Club Ed Smart has nominated his predecessor, Toby Robinson, for the Michael Johnson Rugby Shield for his “continued dedication to the club.”

“Last year, as Captain, he gave countless hours coaching the team and organising matches every week,” says Smart.

“On the field, Toby has played as inside centre as one of our most reliant players both in attack and defence, consistently adding a significant boost to our performance and scoring many points for Oriel.

“This year, as one of our more senior members he has continued to support and grow the club even outside leadership roles, and has left a very positive impact on the club in his time here.”

A finalist, Robinson says two highlights of playing rugby at Oriel College have been competing in the cuppers plate final in his first year, and this year walking onto the pitch alongside fellow student and Wallaby prop Tom Robertson.

“I would like to thank Ed Smart for awarding me the shield and doing such a great job as Captain this year, as well as everyone else who has put on the Oriel rugby shirt, making it such a fun club to be a part of,” he adds.

The Michael Johnson Rugby Shield is awarded in memory of Mike Johnson (1979). Johnson passed away in 2017. Rugby was one of his passions.
